Take Flight Over Paris

A New Perspective
As sunset approached. I arrived at Parc Andre-Citroen. Already, the 100-foot tall helium balloon was reaching towards the sky on yet another ascension. I've been ballooning for 18-years and yet the site of this huge balloon made my heart race as it floated above the Seine. What a great way to see Paris!

Currently sponsord by Eutelsat, makers of communications satellites, the balloon was originally part of millenium celebrations in 1999. At that time Fortis Assurances was the sponsor and offered free rides to all of the children of Paris. So popular was the balloon that it returned with a new sponsor after its' initial contract had expired.

Lofty vantage points abound in Paris at sites like the Eiffel Tower, Montparnasse Tower, Arc de Triomphe, etc. But this is different. it was in France that ballooning first began. It was in Paris in 1783, that the first manned flight took place from the Tuileries Gardens. Now, 230-years later, another balloon is back with a "basket" that will hold 30-people, controlled by modern-day technology and offering view like nothing else.

We lifted off, tethered by a cable and winch system, at a gradul rate. Within a few minutes we were 400-feet in the air looking directly at the Eiffel Tower and the rest of Paris. As the sun dropped lower, the city took on a warm, golden glow I had never experienced. The thrill of this little-known diversion will never leave you as you look out across the neighborhoods that make up this beautiful city. Even the pilots said this was their favorite time of day to be flying.

On a clear day every monument that is Paris is visible from this altitude. Since you're not strapped to a seat you can wander around the basket taking pictures you won't get elsewhere. A netting over the basket is in place to prevent another parachutist from making a base jump here as one had done a couple of years ago. Luckily it doesn't hinder your views of the city.

The Eutelsat Balloon is at Parc Andre-Cirtoen, in the 15th Arrondissement. Metro stop is Javel Andre-Citroen or Balard. Call in advance to verify weather conditions. Reach them at 01-44-26-2000. Adults are $10, and reduced rates are available for children and students. On the internet ogo to http://www. aeroparis.com.

Languedocienne Style in the Carcassonne Shadows

A Special Small Hotel in France
A quiet elegance comes over you as soon as you drive up to the Hostellerie Chateau Saint Martin. A short distance from Carcassonne, the hotel has been refurbished in the old "bastide-Languedocienne" style with the added touches of modern conveniences and a wonderful pool.

I happened on the Chateau by accident. Planning our family vacation to include the largest walled city in the world I was undecided on a stay within the walls or in the country....touristy or honest French. As I was surfing the internet, the Chateau site appeared way down a list someplace. But what a find! An inviting, airy appearance offering a quiet relaxation yet nearly in the Walled City's shadow. Perfect!

We arrived mid-afternoon at the property. It was an easy drive from Carcassonne-proper through what can only be described as the "newish" residential area of Montredon. At the outskirts to this area was the hotel. New, clean, inviting with gardens well-manicured and, just a short walk down a pleasant path, is the restaurant.

Our upper-level room looked across the garden and through the trees to the old tower entrance to the restaurant. Rooms are comfortable and air-conditioned with colors complementing the rest of the hotel and reflecting the Southwestern French style. The 15-rooms range in price from $50 to $85 per night.

The breakfast room has floor-to-ceiling glass walls on two sides giving the impression of being outside. Through the sliding doors was the pool area with the Carcassonne ramparts in the distance. Solar-heated (spelled c-o-l-d) and a welcome site after a hot hike around Carcassone's old streets, the pool drew a number of guests during the quiet hours of the late afternoon.

The Restaurant Chateau Saint Martin is beautiful! The gracious welcome, the classic surroundings and fine china are your first taste of a dinner you will remember. The expert touch of the chef on the preparation of the cassoulet or fresh seafood will be enough to bring you back again and again. Dinner menus are $30-$54.
